Galway indie-folk outfit Groev have been absolutely everywhere lately. Riding the massive wave of their breakout single "Tara Grove" (which easily smashed 250k streams) and packing out iconic venues like Róisín Dubh and Whelan's (I can confirm the Whelan's gig was incredible), they are easily one of the most exciting acts around right now.

Today they’re dropping their highly anticipated new single "Subtle" and let me tell you, you're gonna have to make time in your day to listen to this one. Serving as the band's first proper love song, its full of intimate moments of early romance. As Rory from the band put it perfectly, the track is all about "getting to know someone, not knowing what to do but just being happy."

I've been lucky enough to have early access to this track for the last few weeks, and it’s quickly become one of my absolute favorites. When I first hit play, I was honestly taken aback by the shift in their sound. It’s such a bold step in a brilliant direction that I actually reached out to the guys to ask if they’d been working with a new producer. That is how incredibly polished and mature it feels. It gives off Lumineers type vibes right from the jump, especially with the clever choice of repeating the last line of every verse.

And don’t worry; despite the refined sound this time around, it still features those instrumental moments that Jack absolutely loves eating up!

Opening with the gorgeously visual line, "Saw her smoking underneath the light / I asked her hand, but she wanted mine," the song perfectly bottles up imagery of autumn rain, skipping stones, and sharing secrets behind closed doors. Having heard it live a couple of times already, I can confirm it fits seamlessly into their current setlist while also elevating their whole discography. It’s just undeniable proof of how much these guys are growing as artists.

True to their brand and the track's name the lads have even hidden a few clever easter eggs in the single's cover art. Take a close look while you're streaming it today and see what you can spot. It’s exactly that kind of attention to detail and connection with their fans that makes Groev so fun to follow right now, especially since they've just been named as one of Whelan's Ones to Watch for 2026.

With plans to hit the festival circuit and release even more music this year, Groev's momentum is showing no signs of slowing down. If you want to hear "Subtle" in all its live glory, they are playing the TF Royal in Castlebar on May 1st, and tickets are available over on Eventbrite.
