Review: Noah Kahan – The Great Divide

We may have been waiting what feels like donkey’s years for this one but its finally here. If you’ve been following Noah Kahan for the last while, you know "The Great Divide" isn’t exactly "new", it’s been a staple in his live sets for nearly two years now. Like half the fandom, I’ve been guilty of rinsing those TikTok snippets and the shaky concert videos on YouTube just to get a fix. But now we finally having the official studio version in our hands. And I'm glad to report he hasn't changed the track completely into a super polished unrecognisable version.

This track kicks off the era for his upcoming album of the same name (dropping in April) which we announced recently, and if this is the benchmark, we are in for a serious treat. Lyrically, Kahan is back doing what he does best: making you sit aimlessly staring into the void while making it sound like a folk-pop bop. The verses are filled with some of this best lyrics. Lyrics that Noah so effortlessly puts out there but that hold so much weight. The opening verse compares himself and someone else to two "morons" with cigarette burns, driving aimlessly along the Twin State line, an example of classic Kahan imagery of rural boredom and reckless youth.

The chorus is the real heart of the track.. The line "I hope you settle down, I hope you marry rich / I hope you're scared of only ordinary shit" has to be one of the most heartbreakingly sweet wishes you could make for a friend or past relationship. I've been listening to that chorus for 2 years now and it still made an impact today when I was listening to this version. He’s basically wishing them a boring, safe life because the alternative they lived through was too chaotic.

I’ve had a look at the fan reactions, and while some people are saying they miss the rougher, acoustic vibe of the live version, I think the studio polish does the song justice and like I mentioned above, it doesn't take away from the original feeling the track gave. It feels grander. Noah has spoken a bit about taking a break and feeling a "divide" between his old life and this massive new fame, and you can really feel that distance in the song. Noah has knocked it out of the park with this one. After the absolute madness of Stick Season, there was a worry he might struggle to follow it up, but "The Great Divide" proves he’s not a one-trick pony. It’s emotional, it’s catchy, and it’s fierce authentic. April can’t come fast enough!
