Darren Kiely releases new track 'Hidden Away' - Read our first impressions here

Darren Kiely has just released his new track 'Hidden Away', a song about "chasing change but also hiding in it". After just a few listens, that theme is immediately recognisable. Darren's schedule has been relentless these last few years, and this track touches on a lot of experiences he's faced over that time. The song starts off with those raspy signature vocals that are unmistakeable Darren Kiely; there is simply not a voice like this in the scene right now. The man could recite the alphabet and it would still give you goosebumps.
Lyrically, this is Darren at his absolute best. He has this way of describing a feeling you didn’t even know you had until he sings it. One of my favourite lines, "Desperation dressed in suits and ties," is such an accurate description of that corporate, soul-crushing grind, all dressed up and seemingly just looking for approval and in search of their true self.
The track continues with a line that stood out to me the second I heard it: "If you can't see me, I can't let you down." I mean, come on, if that's not real I don't know what is. You can feel this almost anxiety to leave home, the idea being that as long as the people back in Cork (or wherever else) can’t see you struggling, you haven’t failed them.
Sound-wise, it’s authentic. It’s not overdone, but it also has its own unique sound compared to his other tracks. While listening, I couldn't help but think of how it is going to sound with a crowd singing it back. There are moments where I can see the music almost coming to a stop and just Darren and the crowd screaming the lyrics to each other. It reminds me a bit of the colder, more isolated moments on "Mom & Dad," but with a bit more bite to it, a sound down to the genius of David Baron.
All in all, it’s nice to see someone as accomplished as Darren still be so authentic. He has gone from strength to strength recently, just announcing a massive support slot on The Lumineers: The Automatic World Tour (which he absolutely deserves). 'Hidden Away' feels like the song of a man who has come out the other side of the "leaving" grief. He’s realised there may be more to him wanting to move away than just what some would label as growth. And that realisation has resulted in another classic for fans.
